GREENVILLE, Calif. March 26, 2013—Every year Mountain Circle Family Services takes foster teens ages 14 and up on an adventurous ski trip to Sugar bowl where they learn new skills and bond with each other as well as their mentors.
This year the group consisted of 23 participants; five adults and 18 foster teens from Susanville, Greenville, Portola, Chico and Reno. The beginner skiers and snowboarders were treated to a group lesson before attempting the bunny hill for the first time while the advanced winter spots enthusiasts were allowed to choose runs based on their skill level with Mountain Circle staff close by.
When asked what he liked most about the trip, one teen boy said, “getting outdoors for the weekend.”
The trip wasn’t just about skiing and snowboarding, the group also went sledding and on a night hike. All of the weekend activities had the purpose of teamwork and bonding.
“I learned that when you fall, get back up and do it again until you do it right,” said one participant.
The five staff members that participated in the weekend included the Executive Director, Nevada Program Manager, THP Program Manager, the Susanville Social Worker and the non-profits own Information Technology Technician.
One teen girl commented, “The staff is awesome! I want to go on this trip again next year.”
Mountain Circle is able to host this inspiring trip because of their annual fundraiser Running with the Bears Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K. All proceeds of the highly anticipated event go to activities like this for the foster kids in care. This year the race will occur on August 17th in Greenville, CA.
Mountain Circle Family Services would love to host more weekend trips and activities similar to the ski trip and would love help from sponsors and community members.
