Sometimes you meet someone and listen to their story and it’s just awe inspiring.  I love hearing everyone’s story, as we are all so unique.  Talking with Lindsay and hearing her story touched me.

Moving day

Moving day

When her brother, sister in law and three children were in a head on collision due to reckless driving, her sister in law and one child were killed.  The two surviving children were in critical care.  One ended up moving in with her biological father and Michael – after a two year battle, was adopted by Lindsay.  After the accident, which left Michael with a fractured skull, broken clavicle and arm, a hand broken in 3 places and internal bleeding, he was life flighted to the hospital in dire condition.  Lindsay knew immediately that she wanted to be the family member that adopted and raised Michael.

Once her little guy was stable, in August 2011, Lindsays 3 year old son Michael came to live with her.  It was a grueling 2 year battle to finalize the adoption.  Lindsay was licensed as a foster parent and then the court battles began.  On August 1, 2013, Michael was no longer a foster child and nephew, but Lindsays son.

That wasn’t the only battle Lindsay was fighting.  She ran track in high school but also started gaining weight.  In college Lindsay stopped running and continued to gain weight.  She gained more over time – 50 pounds in the first year Michael lived with her.  At her heaviest, Lindsay weighed 277 pounds and decided it was time to do something about it.  Michael had lost one Mommy, he didn’t need to lose another one due to weight and health issues.  Lindsay joined Weight Watchers and started walking.   It took 11 months to lose 100 pounds.

Before and After

Before and After

At first Lindsay couldn’t walk a mile, but she kept at it.  The first time Lindsay ran a mile was in January 2013.  She’s worked with a doctors approval and utilizes a running group in Eugene, OR through the local running company.  Joe Henderson – past editor of Runner’s World leads the group.  Now it’s been 18 moths since joining Weight Watchers and attempting to walk that first mile.  Lindsay has lost a total of 138 pounds and hit her goal in June of 2014, losing 1/2 her body weight.  July was the month Lindsay ran her first half marathon in Eugene.  Lindsay knew that losing weight would add quality to her life as well as Michael’s but in the process she fell in love with running.

This year Lindsay is signed up for four 5K’s, two 10K’s, a half marathon and a full marathon – scheduled in Portland, OR October 5th.  When Lindsay heard about Running with the Bears it was a way to marry all the changes in her life.  Foster care and adoption, raising money and running.  We are glad to have her with us!!
