Thank you to the High Desert State Prison for your generous donation to Mountain Circle Family Services and our work with children and youth in foster care!
Warden Spearman recently presented Mountain Circle Family Services with a donation of $1,200.00. This donation is from the High Desert State Prison (HDSP) Charitable Fund, which is generated from offender fundraising activities throughout the year. Allowing inmates the opportunity to give back to their community is the philosophy of ‘Restorative Justice-‘ an idea which acknowledges the importance of engaging prisoners in a healthy way so they can feel empowered to make meaning out of their experience. Restorative Justice draws on the strengths of the prisoners, rather than dwelling on their deficits, in an attempt to promote healing and reconciliation.
Adding to the impact of their contribution is the statistic that nearly 1/3 of inmates were once foster children themselves.
The donation from HDSP will be used to support Mountain Circle’s ‘PowderQuest’ Program, an all-expenses paid outdoor leadership weekend for older foster youth. A video from this trip can be seen HERE. The PowderQuest trip is about much more than snowboarding; it is a tool for youth to bond with their older mentors, and an opportunity to gain confidence and self-esteem. Youth who are currently in care with Mountain Circle, as well as those who have EVER been in care with Mountain Circle, are invited each and every year. It is our way of saying ‘welcome back home’ to the Mountain Circle Family!
Every single day, Mountain Circle works with nearly 100 children and youth in Northern California and Nevada. You can help us make a positive impact by joining our Charity Runner Program! Read all about it HERE. THANK YOU for being part of our team, these kids deserve it!
