The evidence shows that LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in the foster care system and that these youth face serious risks and challenges beyond those experienced by other youth. All youth in care need nurturing homes that provide them with a safe place to process their feelings of grief and loss, freedom to express who they are, and structure to support them in becoming responsible, healthy adults. Mountain Circle’s core services include support for LGBTQ children, youth, and families such as support groups, LGBTQ-specific adoption education, inclusion in all events, recognition of LGBTQ families through the agency’s website, and LGBTQ competent mental health support. All staff and Resource Parents are trained on the needs and best practice of LGBTQ children and teens, including instruction on competency and sensitivity, and related best practices for providing adequate care for children or youth identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender, including Gender Expression and Intersectionality.  Here is an excellent guide for Resource Families in working with  LGBTQ youth: https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubPDFs/LGBTQyouth.pdf
